Known as the Nation's Summer Capital, because of the large number of tourists from Washington, DC, Maryland, Pennsylvania and northern Delaware, Rehoboth Beach has always been a place to vacation. The earliest records of settlers were of Native Americans who traveled to Rehoboth Beach during the summer months to enjoy the cool ocean breeze and bountiful seafood. Later it became a religious summer retreat for Methodist. The Rehoboth Beach Camp Meeting Association created by Methodist Episcopal Church purchased 414 acres for just $10,000 then set up tents, all with an ocean view.
In 1873 the first boardwalk was built when 8-foot, rough-cut oak slabs were laid across the sand. Todays Rehoboth Beach boardwalk enterprise traces back to Charles S. Horn Sr. who bought two lots and constructed a pier and pavilion, and sold souvenirs to tourists. Later he built Rehoboth Beachs first movie theatre.
Route 1 paved the way to help make Rehoboth Beach one of the most popular seaside resorts on the east coast in 1925, allowing for faster and easier travel to the area.
There are several well-known sites in Rehoboth that many visitors and residents make a point to visit: Grotto Pizza, Thrashers, Dolles big orange sign and the Womens Christian Temperance Union fountain. There is also a wide array of upscale restaurants for fine and casual dining.
Rehoboth Beach is a part of the Cape Henlopen School District in Sussex County.
